THE STORY BEHIND THE MURAL

This mural, commissioned by the Murphysboro Tourism Commission, recognizes and honors one of the town’s celebrated citizens, General John A. Logan, as the founder of Memorial Day. It shows Logan at the July 22, 1864, Battle of Atlanta as he rallies his men and turns the tide of battle toward a Union victory.
